Description
Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection is available with the branding “AZOPIP 1.125” and is a drug belonging to the class of ‘Antibiotics’, which is used mainly to cure bacterial infections. Piperacillin+tazobactam is prescribed for the treatment of multiple hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia, urinary tract infections, intra-abdominal infections, skin and soft tissue infections (such as diabetic foot infections) and uterine infections. Bacterial infection develops when pathogenic bacteria multiply in the body and make it sick. It can infect any organ of the body and grows very fast.
Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection has two drugs, i.e., Piperacillin (a β-lactam antibiotic) and Tazobactam (a β-lactamase inhibitor). Piperacillin is a member of the ‘Penicillin antibiotics’ class. It is bactericidal (bacteria-killing) in action against gram-positive and gram-negative aerobic (depending on oxygen for living) and anaerobic (lives in minimal or no oxygen) bacteria. This β-lactam antibiotic works by attaching to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) in the bacterial cell wall, preventing the bacteria from forming its protective cell wall.
Tazobactam is an inhibitor of beta-lactamase. Beta-lactamases are the bacterial enzymes that enable bacteria to become multi-resistant to β-lactam antibiotics, including penicillins and cephalosporins. Tazobactam inhibits the degradation of other antibiotics by beta-lactamase enzyme-producing bacteria. In this drug, Piperacillin is inhibited from being destroyed by bacteria by Tazobactam.
Uses of Piperacillin and Tazobactam Injection
- Treatment of Intra-Abdominal Infections: It is used in the treatment of serious intra-abdominal infections by acting on the bacteria causing them.
- Respiratory Tract Infections: It is employed in the treatment of severe respiratory infections, such as pneumonia.
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: This injection is employed in the treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections, such as surgical wound infections, bites, or diabetic foot infections.
- Urinary tract infections: It can also be used in treating urinary tract infections, to remove the bacteria that cause these infections.
- Gynaecological Infections: It is applied to the treatment of severe infections in women, such as pelvic inflammatory disease and endometritis, by acting against a wide spectrum of bacteria.
Medical Benefits
- Piperacillin is a Penicillin antibiotic. It works through binding to the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) within the bacterial cell wall and inhibiting the synthesis of their cell wall.
- Tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that inhibits the degradation of other antibiotics by beta-lactamase enzyme-producing microbes.
- In this work, Tazobactam inhibits bacteria from breaking down Piperacillin.
- This injection helps to treat several bacterial infections of the stomach, lungs, skin and uterus.
